Professor Lei has worked at the University of New England since July, 2010.  He teaches undergraduate courses such as Cell and Molecular Biology (BIO 370), Developmental Biology (BIO 407), and Developmental Neurobiology (BIO 450).  He treasures undergraduate education and was given the Debra J. Summers Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence in 2018.

In addition to classroom teaching, Professor Lei conducts research in two areas: 1) transcriptional regulation of gene expression in neural development; and 2) evolution of transfer RNA (tRNA) and the genetic code.  He has published a number of articles in high profile journals, often involving contributions from student researchers that he mentored.  His research on the evolution of tRNA and the genetic code led to the publication of a book, The God Molecule: Evolution of tRNA and the Genetic Code (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, ISBN: 1-0364-1012-9, ISBN13: 978-1-0364-1012-4, http://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-0364-1012-4).  This book addresses the origin of tRNA and provides clear insights into evolution of the genetic code and the origin of life.
